No Empty Plate

Hosted by Jonas Werner
Sponsoring Organization: Azure Cafe
Event Description:
"No Empty Plate" is a hunger awareness project that will raise contributions for the local food pantry. The FCS pantry saw 20,000 visits last year, with greater expectations of need this year. Jonas, owner of Azure Cafe, already a caring and creative community services activist, will take the lead in this program creating a visual reminder to folks, in a prominent place in his cafe, that poverty and hunger is alive and well in most American communities. A place setting, featuring an empty plate, will accept donations that will be used by the local food pantry to purchase food at Good Shepherd food bank. All Azure Cafe receipts will remind folks to contribute to the cause - and all donations will be generously matched by an caring anonymous donor!
Location: 123 Main Street
Directions: Just a few doors down from LLBean on the same side of the street. Look for the beautiful outside cafe setting!

Keeping Communities Warm and Safe
September 27, 2008 12:00PM to 02:00PM
Hosted by Johanna Hanselman
Sponsoring Organization: Keep Us Warm
Event Description:
In answer to tremendous need, the Keeping People Safe and Warm group was formed of local caring volunteers. This committee has an immediate mission of winterizing as many homes as possible before the cold season begins. Drafty mobile homes, century-old houses and all dwellings needing attention will be the focus of this group's service during the Service Nation Day of Action and beyond. Volunteers will do everything from filling gaps and cracks with foam insulation to sealing outlets, windows and doors with caulk and sealers. They will insulate pipes, weather strip doors, replace shower heads and lightbulbs with new energy-efficient ones for those families who cannot do it themselves. This project promises to become an ongoing initiative, and invites all interested citizens to become involved.

Because We Care
September 27, 2008 12:00PM to 02:00PM
Hosted by Carol Piecuch
Sponsoring Organization: The Freeport Elders
Event Description:
The Freeport Elders are a talented group of involved seniors who love a challenge and respond to community needs all year long. On Service Nation's Day of Action, the Elders will be involved in a number of helping projects, including the following: A Case for Smiles: Beautiful, colorful, smile-inducing pillowcases will be sewed, washed and packaged to be given to children suffering with cancer and other devastating illnesses. Just knowing that they are cared about will help make any child feel better. Prayer Shawls: Those Elders who knit and crochet will have fingers flying creating warm, handcrafted shawls and lap blankets to be lovingly given to terminally ill patients in homes, hospitals an hospice organizations in the area. Shopping Green: The creativity and ingenuity of the Elders is never ending and the proof will be in the creation of "green" shopping bags for patrons at the food pantry. Replacing plastic grocery bags, the elders will take donated tee shirts, cut the sleeves away, open up the neck of the shirts a bit, and sew up the bottom to create the coolest shopping bags you could ever imagine. The bags will then be given to the food pantry for use by every patron. Donations of yarn, tee shirts, thread and fabric will be happily accepted and used for these great projects. Come join the Elders....the more, the merrier!
